i just checked the view's video page here and they actually have the segment up of rosie o'donnell doing "ching chong". the video is labeled, "the view-hot topics-danny devito". it's about 3 minutes long and around the 2:06 mark she starts her "ching chong" thing.
i honestly thought i was hallucinating the whole thing because i hadn't heard about it via racialicous or angry asian man. so, i wrote to rosie via her blog to see if/how she would respond. nothing yet. i'll keep you posted if i hear anything....
UPDATE 12/7 :
the view got pre-empted by the president (what? is he covering up for her now?) i checked to see what videos they had available and there wasn't an apology. i don't know for sure if she apologized or not.
still no email from rosie. and on her blog, she's no longer taking any questions. so, i wrote and complained to barbara. that'll get me nowhere but i'm glad i got my measley 2 centavos out.
links to the video have been posted to racialicious, angry asian man, harlow's monkey and now - youtube and gawker (and um, what anonymous email tips... i didn't send numerous anonymous email tips to bigger bloggers than me.... wuh- huh? 0_o ) .
UPDATE 12/8:
i watched the view this morning and i didn't see/hear an apology either. it actually looked like a taped show. at one point, joy behar had mentioned her maiden named sounded japanese and then there was a *jump*. there was laughter where there wasn't a joke. it was weird.
the video has been taken off the view video site. but it's been youtubed:
Thanks for the comment earlier and for posting this excellent update. I completely agree that there needs to be a public apology from Rosie. In my eyes, she has lost all credibility as a social role model and whenever she campaigns for gay rights I'll only think of what a hypocrit she is and how she casts the entire movement in a negative light. Those who fight for equality and fair treatment should do so for all of humanity.
Very nice compilation of news on the topic. As a Chinese American who has experienced being heckled and harrassed by people mocking my Asian heritage, I really appreciate your blog. Has somebody started some sort of petition yet about this? It seems like after that whole fiasco with those asian themed t-shirts, more people would be active about something like this.
jen - thanks for linking to me and stopping by! i'm still pretty dumbfounded by the whole thing. and honestly, i wonder if she's sleeping at night (and not just cause she's a mom). on the one hand, she's criticizing kelly ripa and michael richards for their insensitivity and inviting britney spears over to live with her. but on the other hand, she's showing her children and the general public that it's ok to say racist stuff "when you're joking".
cynthia - thanks for stopping by! unfortunately, i checked asian media watch, asian media watchdog and media action network. usually there's a petition going but i haven't seen anything about rosie on any of those sites/forums. maybe i'm not looking in the right places? i'll keep checking and update with any news.
I'm not surprised by those comments. I was listening to Howard Stern once and some bored housewife with all the answers to humanity's problems decided to chime in on how blacks can reclaim the N-word just like how gays reclaimed "queer."
Howard and another individual in his staff mocked her on the air saying that it's not as simple as that.
"You know, I used to get mad that my husband called me a cunt but now I want everyone to call me a cunt!"
"Yea, I used to be called a stupid jerk but now I like it when I get called a stupid jerk."
These housewives live in their own little bubble and they're going to have a rude awakening sooner or later.
anonymous - the thing is i'm a housewife and a stay at home mom. i assume that i am, for the most part, like many of the view's audience/demographic.
but, i actually watch the show for sh*t like this. it's not uncommon for barbara or joy or elizabeth to say really ignorant stuff.
my problem is that rosie's supporters/viewers now think asians are just being hypersensitive.
so, to me that translates into this: when the bubble living housewife gets a phonecall that her son/daughter was racially taunting an asian child at school, she won't bat an eyelash. she won't even think about reprimanding her child. she'll just pat herself on the back, secure in the knowledge that the asian child and his/her parents are just being hypersensitive. that neither her child nor she's a racist.
bubbles exist indeed. but, i can't help but feel that i have to help burst that bubble - especially for my children. otherwise, i'm no better than rosie.
If Rosie actually used an accent, then maybe we are being a wee bit sensitive, but she didn't. Ching-Chong is NOT an accent! Why can't these Rosie defenders get it through their thick skulls that this expression has a history of hurt and hate for Asian Americans?
Oh yeah, we get the joke alright, hardee har har...
I find it very offensive that people are telling Asian-Americans what they should and shouldn't get offended by. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever get a formal apology from Rosie or ABC.
