nothing to see... everything's fine... just dandy...

things i have learned from this experience...

1) the next time we pay someone to redo anything in the house, we're also going to go away - even if it means we're sleeping in a storage space for a few days

2) double the time estimate. two days = four days.

3) sometimes homeowners will install linoleum over perfect hardwood floors and then decide they don't like it. but instead of just ripping out the linoleum, they will install a plywood underlay (with 2 inch long screws, 2 inches apart from each other) and incorrectly install ceramic tile on top of that with grout that constantly cracks and breaks off. and there is NO way to restore a perfect wood floor after all that. there is just crying and more crying and voodoo magics...

4) dust will find a way into everything. so, pack the room, like you're moving. what the heck, just repack the house and move.

5) ceramic floor demolition & replacement = an arm and a leg
eating out for every meal for four days = all the change in child's college fund
child not eating grout = priceless

Heh. Brings back memories of Epu and I doing our own ceramic tile kitchen back in SF. We got to be such familiar faces at Rocco's diner down on the corner. NEVER could have pulled that off post baby, though.

The floors look great. We are adding on to our house and a couple more weeks we 'bust through the wall' you have to say that with a lot of enthusiasm. Wish me luck staying sane.

Wow, I'm impressed. :) We're soooo not do-it-yourselfers. We redid our kitchen this summer, and did none of it ourselves. Heh. Floors look great, btw.

ImP - whoa. if and or when you have a breakdown you are more than welcome to come and hang here... i'll be waiting with the alcohol, the chocolate, the punching bag... you name it... may the force be with you, my friend...

disl - BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! you think WE did that? i'm definitely the handy one in the household. i'm not afraid to tackle too many home improvement fiascos. i thank my engineer parents for that. but this floor was beyond my capabilities - i think it was even beyond the capabilities of the pro we hired... which is probably why it took twice as long to complete as he originally estimated.

i have to head on over and catch up on how the new chapter in your life is shaping up... :)
